cEvo at Scientifica

Evolution is universal. That was the central theme of our stall, “Understanding the evolution of life” at this year’s Scientifica festival.

by Louis Du Plessis

cEvo was well represented at this year's Scientifica festival, jointly organised by ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich. During the opening ceremony on Friday evening Tanja gave a talk about the group’s efforts to understand epidemics. Over the weekend, at our stall at the Hönggerberg campus in Zürich, we welcomed members of the public to share insights into our research. We had a broad range of hands-on activities for young and old to spark interest in our work: from piecing together a phylogeny puzzle about the tree of life for children, to a competitive card game challenging players to construct a functioning organ, to a nucleotide reader that guests could use to identify a pathogen from its genome sequence . The influence of our stall was also felt further afield, across the two “epidemics” we simulated among the Scientifica participants.

Many thanks to everyone who helped us develop and test our activities, and especially to all of the guests who visited our stall!
