Synthetic Biology Group

Our group is developing and applying the tools and methods of Synthetic Biology and Biological Computing in the mammalian context. Our research rests on three pillars. The first is fundamental exploration and enabling technology development for precise manipulation and reprogramming of mammalian cells. The second is applying these tools to unmet needs in biotechnology, for example in biomanufacturing and drug discovery. The third pillar is the development of new diagnostics and therapeutics.

Group Head

The group head is Yaakov "Kobi" Benenson. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Chemistry from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Computer Science and Biological Chemistry from the Weizmann Institute of Science. As a Bauer Fellow, he was an independent group leader at Harvard FAS Center for Systems Biology. He joined ETH Zurich in 2010 as an Assistant Professor and was appointed an Associate Professor in 2015. Curriculum Vitae (PDF, 201 KB)
