Topic

Since networks and graphs are flexible data structures to represent objects and their relations, they are of great relevance to bioinformatics for representing proteins, genes and their interactions. Over recent years, research on biological networks such as coexpression, protein interaction and metabolomic networks has become a central topic of bioinformatics, creating a huge demand for developing algorithms for analysing these networks.

This course is intended to be an introduction to algorithms for biological network analysis. These algorithms allow to compare graphs and to search for patterns in networks. In particular, we will focus on kernel methods for analysing biological networks and on algorithms for motif and module search in biological networks.

This course is designed for students of bioinformatics who are interested in algorithms for data analysis on networks and for students of computer science who are interested in data analysis and its applications in bioinformatics.
