Krishna Kasuba defended his PhD thesis

Congratulations to Krishna, who defended his PhD thesis "Engineering novel tools for mechanotyping and mechanocontrol of neurons from the central nervous system" on 19th May 2023. As Krishna's thesis was a collaborative project with Andreas Hierlemann's group, he was also awarded a collaborative hat. Thank you very much for the great apero and party and congrats again!

Ethics in Engineering Life conference urges continuation of dialogue

The speakers at the Ethics of Engineering Life Conference held in September 2022 in Rome agreed on a pronouncement which calls for a continuation of the fruitful dialogue among different disciplines and relevant stakeholders, saying: “In a world in which engineering life is rapidly improving, and new challenges arise in its application, a common effort to disentangle the moral issues would imply universal benefits in terms of ethical admissibility and allow to find the right path forward”.
Selen Manioğlu won the "Biophysical Journal Outstanding Poster Award"

At the Biophysical Society meeting in Stockholm in August, Selen won the poster award for her poster presentation of her work on polymyxin antibiotics.

Congrats, Sophie, for winning the European Middle-Distance Championship in triathlon!

On 27 June, Sophie Herzog won the European championship in middle-distane triathlon at Challenge Walchsee in Austria. After 4:40 hours and 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km of cycling and 21 km of running, she reached the finish line as the first female competitor in her age group (25-29 yr). Congratulations!
Gotthold Fläschner wins ETH medal for his PhD thesis

Congratulations to Gotthold for winning the ETH medal for his outstanding PhD thesis! Daniel is appointed Scientific Member of Max Planck Institute

The restructuring of the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Heidelberg, Germany, towards a focus on interactions between macromolecules in living cells, benefits from the advice of external Scientific Members. The Max Planck Society has appointed Daniel as a Scientific Member to help support the re-orientation of the institute.
David Alsteens receives the Heinrich Emanuel Merck Award

The Heinrich Emanuel Merck Award for Analytical Science 2019 was given to Prof. David Alsteens (UC Louvain) on Sep 3, 2019, in Istanbul. David received the award for his work on investigating receptor-ligand / virus interactions in cell membranes using an approach that combines force-distance curve AFM (FD-AFM) and confocal microscopy. David introduced this approach when he was postdoc in our laboratory.
Swiss Nanotechnology PhD Award for Estefania Mulvihill

Congratulations to Estefania Mulvilhill for receiving the 2019 Swiss Nanotechnology PhD Award. Estefania recieved the award at the 2019 Swiss Nanoconvention (SNC) in Lausanne for her outstanding work on imaging the human inflammatory protein Gasdermin forming lytic transmembrane pores in membranes.
Daniel Müller receives the Marsilius Medal

Daniel Müller has received the Marsilius Medal from the Marsilius Kolleg of the University of Heidelberg. Every semester the Marsilius-Kolleg organizes a Marsilius Lecture in which renowned scientists from different fields speak on cross-disciplinary topics. Associated to the lecture, the Marsilius Medal has been awarded for merits in the dialogue between scientific disciplines.

Botnar Research Centre for Child Health founded in Basel
News
On 19 September, University of Basel and ETH Zurich co-founded the Botnar Research Centre for Child Health (BRCCH) in Basel. The Foundation Botnar will support the BRCCH with 100 Mio CHF. In a team, Urs Frey, Director of the Childrens Hospital, and Daniel Müller worked out the BRRCH concept, which brings together top scientists and clinical researchers from a variety of disciplines to develop new methods, systems engineering principles, and digital innovations for global use in paediatrics.

Hopp Sophie! Sophie qualified for the prestigious 2018 IRONMAN World Championship at Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa, at Sept 1/2, 2018. Sophie qualified among 130’000 athletes to participate. We cross our fingers for a fantastic championship and success - thumbs up!!!
Swiss Nanoscience PhD Prize 2018

Congratulations to Gotthold Fläschner and Rajib Shhubert, each receiving the “Swiss Nanoscience PhD Prize 2018” for their fantastic publications appearing in Nature (2017) and in Nature Biotechnology (2018). The two prizes have been sponsored by Bühler AG and Carl Zeiss AG, Switzerland.
Distinction awarded to Rajib Schubert at SNSF Scientific Image Competition

Rajib Schubert from the Biophysics Group headed by Professor Müller was awarded the distinction at the 2018 SNSF Scientific Image Competition for his image “Lessons in the land of snows” and the video “Neuron ballad”. This video is particularly impressive as it demonstrates the neuronal response of a mouse’s brain while listening to classical music. Rajib’s work was selected from 350 entries submitted to the Swiss National Science Foundation and will be displayed at various festivals and exhibitions.

Johannes presented his fantastic PhD thesis on how outer membrane protein assisted by periplasmic chaperones can insert and fold into lipid membranes. It is all about stepwise insertion and folding pathways of beta-barrels. One more reason to open a selection of barrels of beer, wine and other tasty liquids and to party. Congrats and best wishes to Yosh who will proceed to Sweden to continue his scientific career. Best wishes!

Tania (Tetiana) perfectly passed her PhD exams today. It was the great challenge of her project to characterize how molecular interactions stabilize the state of the lactose permease (LacY) and to characterize in great detail how assisted by an insertase LacY folds into the membrane. Congratulations to Tania to her excellent scientific work!

Mitasha passed her PhD exams today. One of the great challenges in her project was to quantify the adhesion of fibroblasts to extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins. In her thesis Mitasha explored how integrins initiating cell adhesion to ECM proteins crosstalk to efficiently strengthen adhesion. Congratulations to Mitasha to this very nice scientific work!

David has received the Excellence Award in Physics for the development of a picoscopic cell balance. The award is the highest distinction from the Spanish Professional Association of Physicists and recognizes the outstanding trajectories of scientists in different fields of physics with a focus on innovation and industrial applications.

In 2017 Michael, now a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University, will start as a group leader/professor. In addition he just received an ERC grant. We wish you an outstanding time!!!

Congrats to Rajib passing his PhD exams today. One of the great challenges in his project was to stamp neuronal cells! After an endless row of obstacles, hurdles, challenges, complications and … and … and the neuronal stamp worked out and Rajib could pioneer a new technology for nuerosciences (together with B. Roska, FMI).

Congrats to Moritz and David to their new paper appearing in Nature Communications. David and Moritz developed a high-resolution method that allows to image single G-protein coupled receptors and to simultaneously detect their binding to two different ligands. The work was done in collaboration with Brian Kobilka (Stanford) and Shaun Coughlin (UCSF).

New paper in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology

Congrats to Yosh to his new paper appearing in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. Yosh together with the group of Sebastian Hiller (Biozentrum, University of Basel) developed a new nanotechnological assay to study the chaperone assisted folding of integral beta-barrel proteins. By combining this assay with NMR spectroscopy it became possible to unravel the mechanisms of how periplasmic chaperones assist the folding of outer membrane proteins into lipid membranes.
Goodbye to David Alsteens

David accepted a fantastic offer for a full professorship at the University of Leuven, Belgium. The goodbye party was fantastic, we crossed the rhine with the ferry about 20 times and then torkeling to the barbecue. Daniel managed to burn all sausages and demonstrated hi excellent experimental skills. We are grateful that he gave the goodbye party an unforgetable taste which some had to wash off by swimming in the rhine at midnight. We wish David the very very very best! May the force be with you!

Our tennis star Moritz successfully passed his PhD exams at the ETH Zürich giving a perfect match. After all formalities have been done he will be the NEW Dr. super tennis in our lab. Apologize that we do cannot show any of the compromising pictures of the PhD party - after which Moritz right away went to Japan. We do not know whether or when he comes back ;-)
