Elise Aeby received and award for the Best Master Thesis 2016 from the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (external pageSNI) at the University of Basel for developing a hydrogel-based hanging-drop platform. Cells from a cell culture are first suspended in a nutrient solution and grown into a microtissue in a hanging-drop platform. Elise then embedded the spheroids in hydrogel, which retains them at a defined position without interfering with the exchange of nutrients, waste products or oxygen. The defined position enables to examine the microtissue at the end of the experiment with standard microcopy tools.
