Sven Panke studied Biotechnology at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany. After research stays at the German National Research Centre for Biotechnology (GBF, Ken Timmis) and the Centro de Investigaciones Biologicas, Madrid (Victor de Lorenzo), he obtained his PhD at the Institute of Biotechnology of the ETH Zurich with Bernard Witholt on the production of fine chemicals with recombinant bacteria in 1999. He then worked for two years in the biocatalysis group of DSM Research in Geleen, The Netherlands. In 2001, he returned to ETH as an Assistant Professor in Bioprocess Engineering and became Associate Professor in 2007. Since January 2009, he and his group are part of the ETHZ Department for Biosystems Science and Engineering in Basel.

His research focusses on the development of highly efficient biocatalysts for novel bioprocesses for the chemical and pharmceutical industry. The work encompasses technology development for ultrahigh-throughput screening procedures, synthetic biology for biocatalyst design, and separation-integrated production processes.
