Project and research interests

Within the Integrated Process Group I am involved in developing simulated moving bed (SMB) processes for the continuous separation of binary mixtures of mono- and disaccharides.
My focus is on the enzymatic synthesis of rare sugars from accessible and cheap starting materials by isomerization and epimerization reactions. Most of these reactions suffer from an unfavorable position of the equilibrium and frequently terminate with low yields. The integration of reaction and separation is an attractive option to overcome the limiting thermodynamic equilibrium.
I am interested in combining process development, modeling and enzyme engineering in a way that delivers both - industrial relevance and generic knowledge on enzymes.
