Project
Within the Integrated Process group I’m responsible for the characterisation and engineering of industrial useful racemases. One goal of my work is to expand the substrate range or improve the substrate acceptance of known racemases by protein engineering towards non-proteinogenic amino acids (e.g. ornithine) which can serve as building block for pharmaceuticals. Given that the direct coupling of racemisation and SMB separation requires the use of an interoperable medium the other goal of my work is to engineer racemases with good operational stability. To achieve this I’m applying a combined approach of mutagenesis to obtain and then immobilisation of optimised variants.
